Open call musical theatre auditions – should you go?

Usually open call auditions for a movie are PR events. The real casting goes on in audition rooms with actors called in through their agents. Musical theatre open call auditions are less clear. In cities where theatre is not the main source of revenue for agents, actors are less likely to get auditions through their agents, so open call auditions may be common.  In NYC where most name theatre actors are repped, an open call may be a futile exercise.

When Hairspray Live announced open call auditions in NYC, aspiring actors came in from all over the country, sometimes at great personal cost and sacrifice. Was it worth it?  Our members weigh in.
